Well here it is!!!  The First officially licensed Masterpiece Model.  This model was finished in late march '03 and made the trek to Grateful Dead Productions on April 1rst 2003.  The model took over 900 hours to build.  Each piece is completely hand made and is done to exacting detail.

Sit back and check out some of the pictures!

And please note that most of the pictures are thumbnails and do take a while to load!!!

Here are the Features:

OUTSIDE

SOUND AND LIGHT

The Terrapin Model has a interactive Sound and Lighting system built into the model.  There is a CD player located in the hinged box on top of the model.  The sound is then ran though the lights with the lights having four distinct channels that react to different frequencies in the music.  There is a total of 80 lights which can be replaced easily by opening the model from the hinged top.  The sound system is a 4 speaker system with a sub woofer that has the amp encased.  The system is set up as a Dolby 5.1 system with 100 watts rms of clean sound.  The lights are controlled by a circuit in the top which allows the user to vary the intensity of the four channels.  The model is best viewed when it is dark to properly recreate the concert.

CASE

                        terrapin 31.jpg (106385 bytes)                     terrapin early.jpg (53770 bytes)                terrapin 3.jpg (85946 bytes)

The model features a inner frame with an exterior shell to allow access for repair or upgrades.  The exterior is made from Stained OSB or as we call it Tye-Dyed lumber.  The inside frame is made from mostly 1x2's which are both glued and mechanically secured.  The bottom of the shell is made from a 3/4" dense partical board.  This protects the base as well as adds weight to the overall structure.

Glass

                                              terrapin 32.jpg (108590 bytes)          terrapin 10.jpg (126375 bytes)

The front of the model is made from 1/8 shatterproof acrylic glass.  There is 3 distinct pieces that have been joined by a silicone joint.  The upper and lower trim pieces hold the glass securely on the front.  The trim has sculpted fiberglass rose vine structures adhered to the actual trim.  The overall effect of the acrylic is amazing, when the model is lit up in a dark room the glass becomes invisible.

Wiring and Venting

                        terrapin 34.jpg (71658 bytes)                                                 terrapin top open.jpg (91853 bytes)

All of the wiring has been ran though tracks on the back side of the model.  A wire loom of 6' comes from the back of the model and runs to the sub-woofer control box.  Two 110 volt outlets are required to run the model.  The Terrapin model also features a unique venting system that allows the air required to cool the inside is filtered by a single removable filter located on top of the model.

Dimensions and Weight

The overall dimensions of the model are 52" Wide   22" Deep   26" Tall.  The unit is made to fit in a corner application.  The weight is estimated at 80-110 pounds.

Inside

Stage Gear

           terrapin 2.jpg (175125 bytes)                terrapin 6.jpg (122207 bytes)          terrapin 23.jpg (108002 bytes)                   terrapin 35.jpg (72318 bytes)

All of the stage gear was made to scale from over 400 pictures of the actual concert.  Countless hours were spent researching the actual systems used at the reunion concert.  Most of the pieces were made from Renshape or various types of hardwood.  After a piece is fabricated it received at least 2 coats of paint, detail work, and a final sealant.  There is roughly 180 pieces of stage gear made.  Glow in the dark paint was used to accent any parts that may have been lit up.  Every single microphone on all equipment along with power cords to each piece.  The amount of detail to the stage gear is absolutely staggering.

Figures

              terrapin 18.jpg (105038 bytes)               terrapin 8.jpg (66682 bytes)          terrapin 17.jpg (85971 bytes)               terrapin 20.jpg (90163 bytes)

The 7 members of "The Other Ones" were made to great detail.  The figures were hand sculpted from Sculpey clay and then fired at a low temperature.  7 coats of paint were then applied with two coats of glaze to seal the paint and clay.  The detail is "Extremely Fine".  The guitars were made from clay as well and the organs and drums were made from different material.

Drums

The dual drum sets of Billy and Mickey were made to exacting detail.  Each drum was made including the famous 3 drum ring located behind the "Rhythm Devils".  All of the appropriate mic's are in place with cables.  The cymbals were made from clay and then coated with a metallic paint.  All said in done it took over 70 hours to complete the drums.

Lighting & Sound

The lighting and sound systems inside the model were made to mimic the real thing.  There are over 80 lights and 4 main PA Speakers.  There are over 10 stage monitors and all of the guitar amps were made.  And to top it off the main power amps and stage mixing boards were also made-- And so on!

All in all there is just to much to list and describe in this MASSIVE Project.  Hope you enjoy the pic's!!
